YOLANDA RUIZ Expressive, Vibrant, Sultry and Sensual
“The best part about performing is when you’ve connected with someone… it’s so moving and powerful. Playing live is when I get to see my work come to life, and it’s the one place I truly feel fearless.”
-Pop songwriter/performer Yolanda Ruiz
For Los Angeles-based songwriter/performer Yolanda Ruiz, music is more than just a form of expression; it’s about the experience of connecting with her audience. Through her sultry, expressive voice and sensual rhythms, Yolanda delivers a sound that crosses cultural and age boundaries. Yolanda’s latest single “On the Dancefloor” will be hitting the dance floors this summer.
Yolanda’s early love of dancing and singing progressed through high school as she learned cover songs and competed in local talent competitions. She was also part of an entertainment group that performed at local festivals and events. Right after high school, Yolanda took that milestone step from being a singer and dancer, to being a songwriter. The first song she wrote, “The Person I Am” was based on journal writings. She knew then that music was going to be a lifetime commitment. At 20 years old, Yolanda released her first single, “Together Forever,” which garnered tons of airplay on San Francisco’s KYLD 94.9, hitting number eleven on their playlist. With the single’s success, she played to larger crowds, including an event at the HP Pavilion (San Jose Arena) with an audience of over 20,000 people. The single also received generous airtime on stations across the country.
Yolanda continued writing and recording new music in her hometown San Jose, CA but felt it was time to explore other opportunities and work with new collaborators and producers. In late 2002, Yolanda made the decision to pack up and make the big move to Los Angeles. Yolanda didn’t know anyone when she moved to LA and didn’t know where to begin, so she started by picking up local music and entertainment magazines, where one connection led to another. She hooked up with other producers, recorded many more of her songs and had interest from major labels, but nothing that ever seemed promising. Yolanda put a band together and performed at some famous LA venues.
In 2007 as she was about to release a new single and video for “Loca,” she entered a national music video contest that featured a record deal with Epic as its grand prize. After 15 weeks of an intense competition, Yolanda was named Music Nation’s Pop winner, which brought more press her way, including television news coverage and a story in Billboard Magazine. Although it was a great honor for her to win the contest, she and the label eventually decided to part ways. With the momentum that Yolanda gained from winning the contest, she continued to move forward and pursue new opportunities.
If the soulful and sexy song “On the Dance Floor” is any indication of the music to come, Yolanda Ruiz’s “next big thing” after that may very well be learning how to live life as a music star, instead of merely being one of pop music’s rising stars.
