If you don't know Eddie Perrell let us give you a little background so you can find out who he is, where he's from & who thinks is music is hot enough to borrow. “Justin Timberlake’s Triple Platinum Album Includes Eddie Perrell’s Song Sample”. It was ‘Oh Happy Day’ for Eddie Perrell a legendary R&B recording artist and song writer when he was informed that Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z had sampled and included his song “Sho-Nuff” in Justin’s Triple Platinum selling album “Suit and Tie.” Shortly thereafter his ‘Happy Day’ became a much happier time when he received his first royalty check from the albums earnings.
Eddie Perrell grew up in Chicago, attended Englewood High School and doo whooped day and night with his cronies on neighborhood street corners imitating popular groups and their recordings. Eddie and his aspiring neighborhood singers would practice and sing selected songs continuously and if the spot they were singing in had an echo that made them sound better, they would declare it their corner, claim squatter’s rights and stay there singing night and day.
Group singing was a big thing!! New groups were emerging daily with hit records. Individuals and groups that thought they could sing or write a tune were springing up everywhere with one thought in mind, ‘get a record, get a hit’. To help tap into the many sources of hidden talent around town, record labels would dispatch employees to various Talent Contests hoping to snag a winner. This practice prompted Eddie and Gene Chandler to form a high school vocal group they named The Gaytones with Eddie and Gene sharing vocal leads. They wanted a piece of this action and they practiced day and night to get it.
During that period, Chess Records, Vee Jay Records and Onederful Records were the three most sought after record labels in Chicago signing and recording local talent. Chess Records, owned by the Chess brothers had hired former band leader and recording artist Paul Gayton to run their Hollywood office, sign artists and handle promotion of product released on one of the company’s three labels, Chess, Checker, and Argo.
Now 40 years later, the song “Sho Nuff” written, sung and produced by Eddie and co-published with James Brown was sampled by Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z, and included in Justin’s triple Platinum selling album “Suit and Tie.” And that’s not the end of this news.
Currently the legendary R&B recording artist, song writer and performer is musically active again!! He has completed producing his new album with the musical assistance and genius of Lou Ragland a Las Vegas musical fixture. Incidentally, Las Vegas is the same city Eddie Perrell now calls home and that’s where he plans to establish his new record label headquarters.
By the way and don’t forget, Eddie Perrell’s new album will be released on June 30th. The title is “Papa Was a Pistol and I’m A Son-of-a-Gun. Make sure you get yours!!
